The "Rock House" where our Grandma Caroline and her youngest Aunt Lindy were born in 1910 and 1913 is located in the heart of some of the richest farm land in Iowa. It is still there today. It was originally built in 1850, and later purchased by Grandma & Aunt Lindy's Grandfather. It was the birthplace of their mother, Edna, and her two sisters. Aunt Lindy lived nearly her entire life in the family home until 1991. It was an adventure for my sisters and I to visit: the water was pumped in the kitchen sink. There were always primroses across the window sills and an old wood stove. Card games were a favorite evening pastime and there was an ancient player piano in the front room. Just around the corner was the room where two generations were born in our family. Up the stairs, the attic housed a lot of "old things" that as kids we were not allowed to get into (we did snoop just a little).
This family home was simple but to Aunt Lindy it could have been a Castle. She had great pride in its origin. Over the years wrote stories and poems about its history, including the family kittys and dogs, names and generations. We would like to think that she would have enjoyed this little replica of a Doll House when she played with her Paper Dolls a long time ago.
