Children in Victorian England had the task of writing greetings to their parents in their very best handwriting. Occasionally, adults took on the time-consuming task of
writing Christmas letters to each other. The printed Christmas card solved this problem. The custom of sending printed cards was started in England by Henry Cole, who did not have time to write letters to each of his relatives. He asked an artist to design a card for him and he had about 1,000 of these cards printed. Those not used by Sir Henry were sold by the printer for one shilling. This was not cheap, which is probably why they did not sell very well at first.
In 1840, the introduction of the "penny post" made it less expensiveto send mail. This, combined with the introduction of color printing and the invention of printing machines, meant thatcards could be printed and mailed more economically and more quickly. Sara has chosen some her favorite postcard designs for this special Christmas collection.
