Victorian Christmas II by Sara Morgan   1890-1900

Following the Puritan ban on celebrations, it took nearly 200 years for Christmas to once again become an important event. Many of the things we most love at Christmas, such as sending cards and pictures of a fat, jolly Father Christmas or Santa Claus, date back to the Victorian age. The Christmas tree became popular, as did gift shopping in big stores.

Children in Victorian England had the task of writing greetings to their parents in their very best handwriting. Occasionally, adults took on the time-consuming task ofwriting Christmas letters to each other. The printed Christmas card solved this problem.

The custom of sending printed cards was started in England by Henry Cole, who did not have time to write letters to each of his relatives. He asked an artist to design a card for him and he had about 1,000 of these cards printed. Those not used by Sir Henry were sold by the printer for one shilling. This was not cheap, which is probably why they did not sell very well at first.

In 1840, the introduction of the "penny post" made it less expensive to send mail. This, combined with the introduction of color printing and the invention of printing machines, meant that cards could be printed and mailed more economically and more quickly.

Sara has chosen some her favorite postcard designs for this special Christmas collection.

  • The Garibaldi 11 collection is my favorite of these three. I would make a large Ohio Star quilt with it. The beautiful stripes would make great borders. Lots of pretty hand quilting in the light areas and simple stippling in the dark areas.
